Unlike any other Chanel collection shown previously, this Cruise 2014 collection was showcased in Singapore. Karl had found it relevant to launch in Singapore, mostly of inner instinct.

“I research with instinct, you see. It has to be a vague impression, but don’t get into the details. Reinvent the details.” – Karl Lagerfeld

Continuing the tradition of Cruise collections taking place in unusual settings, this show was set in a former army barracks building. Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld took his main inspirations from founder of Chanel, Coco Chanel in the early days of her career in the 1920’s. The cohesive collection evoked the feeling of Coco as if she herself were still designing for the house, but in modern day society. Coco Chanel’s main garment traits were seen throughout Karl Lagerfeld’s designs for this Cruise line. Models strut the runway in classic tweed, pearls, black and white colour schemes, spectator shoes, immaculately tailored suits, trousers, Camilla flowers and nautical influences all inspired by the early days of Chanel. All of the classic characteristics from the fashion house were manipulated in luxurious fabrics combined with a modern twist on the construction and detailing using tulle, lace and leather.

Asymmetrical attributes on the monochromatic designs played a key role in modernizing the looks. Karl brought modern technology into the designs by creating tweed which was actually an illusion created from breathable materials making it suitable for warm weather. Coco Chanel wanted to bring fashion into everyday activity wear. Lagerfeld played off this idea when he had a model carry a Chanel cricket paddle down the catwalk. Not only was this look greatly accepted amongst the Australians in the audience, but also brought excitement towards the new flagship Chanel boutique opening in October in Melbourne.

Lagerfeld executed his vision of the collection, he even included a purse that resembled the Chanel No. 5 bottle- the first synthetic perfume created.
