Without a doubt Designers, Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier of Marc by Marc Jacobs had a political yet fashionable statement to make at the fall 2015 runway showing. Models strut the runway setting of a ‘secret garden’ in linear formation with titles “Suffragette,” “Solidarity,” and “Unite” across their garments. A militant essence was portrayed with leather waist pouches, khaki attributes and stud hardware detailing on model’s berets and footwear.
The design process started with images of the Guardian Angels, Curtis Sliwa’s beret-clad citizen patrol, inspired by the activists, Bartley and Hillier played with gender-bending style with function meets fashion innovative tactics. The collection of unique prints and dominant primary colours of red and blue didn’t feel like a blast from the past, but somehow fit for the modern power girl. Reminiscent of ‘old Marc’ and his original ‘Grunge’ collection in the 90s, it was a reinvented cool-girl vibe with the right fashionable tools to take a stand.
