In the heart of a city lies its best kept beauty secrets. Perhaps that is why Karl Lagerfeld chose Seoul as its creative muse. The metropolitan is truly a source of imaginative inspiration due to its fervor for animation, K-Pop and not to mention, the city’s ever-so-young vibe. And for Lagerfeld, it was only befitting to submerge Chanel’s Resort 2016 collection in its colourful traditions.
Lagerfeld sought the help of two of the most influential beauty artists in the industry to bring his vision to life. Hairstylist extraordinaire Sam McKnight created hair that is of Korean aristocracy in all exaggeration. He created oversized braided crowns that embellished models’ heads and then some with a pair of interwoven top knots for a modern and fun twist.
Tom Pecheux complimented McKnight’s work by crafting a makeup look that was inspired by Asian animation. Brows were sophisticatedly overdrawn outside their usual shape, lips were painted bright red (Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Éclatante N°42) and upper and lower lids were decorated with falsies to give models’ eyes a doe-eyed effect.
Sure the elements of cartoon caricatures was overtly present but what truly made it beautiful was staying true to each model’s skin. Makeup artists backstage prep the models’ faces with Chanel’s own Hydra Beauty hydrating range. And bases were perfected with Vitalumiere Aqua, Eclat Lumiere, Correcteur Perfection, Poudre Universelle Libre and Poudre Les Beiges. To bring out the girls’ facial features, Pecheux relied on Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick in Blush N°21.
