This International Women’s Day on March 8th, as the world focuses on Accelerating Action, it’s time to challenge outdated fitness myths that keep women from unlocking their physical strength. Weightlifting is not just about building muscle. It is also about building confidence, increasing resilience, reducing chronic diseases, and improving long-term health.
While many women have embraced the benefits of lifting heavy, some preconceived notions of strength training and longstanding taboos exist.
Fitness World is inviting women of all ages to take action, embrace strength, and rewrite the narrative around fitness and empowerment.
On International Women’s Day, we’d like to celebrate strength by setting the record straight:
- It’s Never Too Late – Lifting weights isn’t just for the young. In fact, studies show women can build muscle at any age, improving mobility, maintaining independence, and increasing healthy years of life.
“As women age, they naturally lose muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia, which can lead to weakness, reduced mobility, and even a greater risk of injury,” said Nastasia Liavas, Vice President of Fitness Services, Fitness World. “Strength training is one of the most effective ways to counteract this. By incorporating resistance exercises, women can build muscle, ensuring they stay strong, active, and independent.”
- Cardio Isn’t the Only Path to Weight Loss – Strength training boosts metabolism, burns fat, and sculpts the body in ways cardio alone cannot.
- Weights Don’t Equate to Bulk – Many women fear becoming too bulky from lifting weights. While that is a desired look for some, bulk is not synonymous with weightlifting; without that extra testosterone, ladies are biologically unable to – build big muscles like guys. Strength training enhances muscle tone, posture, and overall well-being without excessive bulk.
- It Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating – Strength training can be simple, accessible, and affordable.
“At Fitness World, we aim to empower women through strength training. We offer tailored programs, expert-led classes, and dedicated trainers to support individuals of all ages and abilities in achieving their goals. Strength training isn’t just about physical gains—it’s a powerful tool for mental wellness, helping women feel stronger, more confident and unstoppable,” said Nastasia Liavas, Vice President of Fitness Services, Fitness World.
