With each change of the season, your skin has different needs. Social media has unfortunately flooded the market with misinformation, making it seemingly difficult to decipher through the mass of misinformation. Luckily, there are simple tips you can follow to take your skincare game to the next level, right in time for summer!
Emily Trampetti, skincare expert has been providing a variety of clients with skincare advice to better their skin. When spas, beauty consultants, and salons shut down during COVID, she took her knowledge online to offer her clients advice through virtual consultations, and her business flourished. She can discuss more about any skincare on all levels whether mass to the general audience and specific to individual needs.
Here are her five tips to tackle your best skin this summer:
1) What is the one treatment you recommend to all of your clients in the summer seasons?
Keeping in mind that our skin type is most stressed in the winter months – with extra dryness, harsh climates for some, excess holiday skin trauma, cold and flu season, etc – my biggest recommendation for summertime skin treatments is based on the goals of hydration and nourishment. Many people think that they need to go in for deep exfoliation or “detox” treatments to “renew” the skin for summer, but this could set them back in their goals. Healing from winter is the #1 priority for my clients, and it’s what sets their skin up for success all summer long. My recommendation is to get into your esthetician and have them do a summertime consultation, evaluating where your skin is at with its integrity and barrier health. Then, most likely, if you have an experienced and knowledgeable esthetician, they’ll infuse the skin with lots of hydrating, healing, and nourishing ingredients to get you ready for summer.
2) What should people know about this treatment?
Healing and strengthening skin treatment can be anything from a regular hydrating facial to a gentle LED treatment to a moisturizing sheet mask at home. What it ISN’T is a deep exfoliation treatment, an invasive skin-wounding procedure like micro needling, microdermabrasion or chemical peels. You want to save those for fall when your skin needs them. For summer, your skin’s needs are much more likely to be those of healing and hydrating. It’s a time that we work on rebalancing and building up our barrier function. It’s also a time that we revisit our consistent habits in our routine and regular sunscreen application. It’s a bit more boring than shiny and trendy esthetic treatments, but it works! We must remember that there is a time and place for more aggressive, exfoliating treatments, but never when your skin is most vulnerable like coming out of winter.
3) Is there anyone this treatment isn’t good for?
Nope, and that’s the best part about it! Everyone can benefit from a good hydrating and nourishing skin treatment. And there are tons of options for how you can do it. My advice is to always have your esthetician take a peek at your skin and recommend what is best for you as far as ingredients and device supplements, but if you don’t want to go in for a treatment you can do something effective at home as well. Here is a great routine to try on your own for the perfect summertime at-home healing facial:
Step 1: Cleanse your skin with your esthetician-recommended cleanser (Everyone’s skin is different!)
Step 2: Apply a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid or a glycerin-based serum. NO retinoids or acids!
Step 3: Apply your esthetician-recommended cream, gel, or sheet mask that has lots of hydrators, antioxidants, and soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients. Leave on as directed and watch your favorite show!
Step 4: Remove the mask and finish with your skin-specific moisturizer. Don’t forget to add your favorite broad-spectrum SPF 30 if the sun’s still out!
4) How can regular treatments with a skin professional help beef up someone’s routine?
Having a professional partner in your skincare strategy is paramount for great skin! Whether you’re going in for treatments or using a virtual skin coach like myself. The majority of my clients come to me after thinking that Google, Instagram, and TikTok have all the answers to their skin concerns. They often come to me with incredibly damaged skin and no clue how they got there. They’ve tried going at it alone and end up incredibly disappointed. Most of the information out there is unfortunately quite inaccurate and oftentimes either super generalized and ineffective or downright dangerous to the skin. The benefit of having a great relationship with a trusted esthetician is that you can take most of the guesswork out of getting the skin of your dreams. A good esthetician will prioritize getting to know you and your skin and customize a routine directly in line with your goals. And in my experience, that always supercharges someone’s motivation to keep up with their routine and skincare strategies. Especially once they start seeing results.
5) Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Summertime is a time of renewal and awakening. It’s a time of rebirth. We need to look through this lens with summertime skincare as well. It’s the time for gentle treatments and nourishment, routine consistency, and self-care. It is not a time for aggressive treatments that leave the skin even more vulnerable!
