Canadians continue to cool on traditional U.S. travel hotspots and are becoming more intentional about where they go. The shift reflects a growing preference for culturally rich, globally inspired experiences that offer more than just a change of scenery.
According to Flight Centre Canada, bookings to classic U.S. destinations like California, Florida, and New York have steadily declined for the fifth consecutive month—a trend also mirrored in recent Statistics Canada travel data. Travelers are bypassing these once-popular locales in favor of destinations that promise immersive experiences, vibrant cultures, and unforgettable memories.
So where are Canadians heading instead? Here are some of the top smart swaps for well-trodden U.S. favorites:
- Instead of Los Angeles, California: Try Lisbon, Portugal or Sydney, Australia for a cosmopolitan vibe with coastal charm.
- Instead of Las Vegas, Nevada: Opt for Montréal, Quebec or Nassau, Bahamas, offering nightlife, culture, and a unique flair.
- Instead of New York City, N.Y.: Discover the energy of Tokyo, Japan, London, England, or Mexico City, Mexico—each with iconic attractions and world-class cuisine.
- Instead of Miami, Florida: Choose Cartagena, Colombia or Istanbul, Türkiye for sun, soul, and history.
- Instead of Honolulu, Hawaii: Escape to Fiji, The Azores, Portugal, or Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for tropical vibes and stunning landscapes.
- Instead of San Francisco, California: Head to Melbourne, Australia, known for its food, fashion, and arts scene.
“Canadians are swapping quick trips for lifestyle-driven travel choices,” says Amra Durakovic, spokesperson for Flight Centre. “From Lisbon to Tokyo, we’re seeing familiar U.S. favourites take a backseat.”
This trend is also steering the cruise sector in a new direction. For the 42% of Canadians planning to cruise this year, globally inspired sailings are replacing domestic departures:
- Vegas → Mediterranean Cruise (Spain, Italy, Morocco)
- Miami → South Pacific Cruise (Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia)
- New York → Virgin Voyages Cruise (Greek Island Glow)
As global travel bounces back, Canadians are showing a newfound curiosity and willingness to explore farther afield. Whether it’s sipping espresso in Lisbon or sailing the turquoise waters of the South Pacific, today’s traveler is chasing meaningful moments over mainstream stops—and discovering the world one intentional journey at a time.
