Hats are a wonderful accessory. They’re so fun to mix and match with different outfits and can change the whole vibe of an outfit. With so many styles, sizes, and colors available, it can seem like there’s an endless supply of hats to choose from!

While hats are a very versatile accessory, there can be a few roadblocks if you have a large head. Some hats may feel too tight or hurt your head while others won’t even fit. Of all the things you wear in a day, it can be hard to imagine that even hats have sizes, but it’s true. Fortunately, there is a way to find the right hat even if you have a large head.

Finding the right hat to add to your closet of accessories can be a challenge for any woman, even those with small or average head sizes. If you know that you have a large head and are worried about finding the right hat, here are some tips to follow.

#1. Know Your Head Measurements

You shouldn’t expect to find the perfect hat that fits if you don’t know your head measurements. Just like you can’t find clothes that fit if you don’t know what size you are, you won’t find a hat that fits if you don’t know your measurements.

Fortunately, measuring your head isn’t that hard and only consists of one measurement. Unlike dress sizes or bra sizes, you won’t need to remember a series of numbers in order to know what hat size you are. For women with large heads, though, knowing this number is extremely helpful when you do go hat shopping, whether it’s online or in-store.

How to Measure Your Head with a Tape Measure

In order to measure your head, you’ll need a tailor’s tape measure. This is the easiest method, but you can measure your head without a tailor’s tape measure if you don’t have one on hand.

To measure your head, take the tailor’s tape measure and wrap it around the crown of your head. The tape should sit just above your ears and above your brow. Essentially, you want the tape measure to rest where your hat will sit.

If you have a friend around, have them make note of where the tip of the tape measure connects back with the rest of the tape measure. If you don’t have anyone around to help, pinch the tape measure in place and carefully pull it from your head without moving it. You can also take a photo of where the tape measure touches.

The number that the tip of the tape measure touches will be your head measurements, whether you choose to do this in centimeters or inches.

How to Measure Your Head with String

If you don’t have a tailor’s tape measure, you can use a cord or string and a flat ruler. You’ll follow the exact same method as with the tape measure, but you’ll have one extra step to complete.

When the tip of the string connects with the rest of the string, you can either cut it or mark it with a marker. This makes the next step easier.

Unravel the string from around your head and lay it next to the ruler. Measure how long the string is up to the mark or cut and that’s your head measurement!

#2. Know Your Face Shape

Even if you have a large head, your face shape will match those of other people. Identifying your face shape will do wonders to help you find a hat that looks good on you and can help you feel more confident in your hat choices.

With your head measurements in hand and the knowledge of what hats work for each face shape, you’ll always choose the right hat for your head no matter what size hat you wear.

#3. Know Your Style

It’s very likely that you already know what styles you do and don’t like. Perhaps you hate the look of cowboy hats, but you like bucket hats. Maybe you like the look of beanies, but not baseball caps.

Even though certain hat styles will look better on different face shapes, you don’t need to limit yourself. If you have a round face but you really don’t like fedoras, you don’t have to wear one. Instead, try a panama hat or a beanie and see if that’s more your style.

Along these same lines, take into account what your go-to outfit tends to be. Do you always find yourself reaching for a skirt and blouse or do you love wearing jeans and a t-shirt? What colors do you usually wear and what colors do you avoid? This all plays into what type of hat you should wear and what you’ll feel most comfortable in.

#4. Don’t Limit Yourself

Just because you have a large head doesn’t mean you can’t wear hats that you like. You may need to look a little harder to find hats for large heads or try on several different sizes before you find a hat that sits comfortably on your head, but this shouldn’t make you feel like you have to limit yourself.

The thing about having a large head is that you may not be able to go to department stores and find generic hat brands that fit, but you still have options. You may need to search for a large hat store online in order to find a hat style you like, but if you know your head measurements and what styles look great with your face shape, this shouldn’t be worrisome.

Final Word

There’s no one size fits all when it comes to hats. Every woman has her personal preferences and every head is shaped and sized differently. Just because you have a large head does not mean you can’t wear a hat, though, and with the above four tips in mind, you’ll be able to pick the perfect hat to add to your accessory wardrobe in no time.
