The era of simple resort vacations may be over, with more Canadians looking outside of their comfort zone by choosing to forego a beach chair in favour of diving deeper into new destinations.
A Flight Centre survey conducted by YouGov reveals evolving priorities among Canadian travellers. Beach vacations (42%) and family getaways (42%) remain popular, but trends like quiet travel (29%), cultural connection (27%), adventure travel (18%), gourmet experiences (14%), and sustainable exploration (9%) signal a shift toward thoughtful exploration.
To help guide Canadians into a bolder direction, Flight Centre Canada has outlined its travel trends for 2025, highlighting what’s In and Out for Canadians to get out of their comfort zones:
What’s In
- Cross the Line: Go beyond resort boundaries and all-inclusive packages to explore what makes a destination unique.
- Alternative Destinations: Opt for unforgettable alternatives like Malta instead of Italy or Costa Rica over Mexico, where your visit contributes to preservation and supports local culture.
- Authentic Connections: Dine at local eateries, explore artisan markets, and choose community-led tours for a more intimate experience.
- Adventure Tours: Travel solo, as a duo, or with family through tour operators like G Adventures or Intrepid. These operators prioritize giving back to the communities they visit and supporting local economies.
What’s Out:
- Overrun Hotspots: There’s safety in numbers, but not when you can’t move. Skip the usual tourist traps for hidden gems where your time is spent leisurely, not in line.
- Peak Season FOMO: Off-peak travel is the new luxury—fewer crowds, more authentic experiences, and often, better deals.
- Transactional Travel: Forget rushed sightseeing. Embrace slower, personal, and culturally connected journeys.
- One-Size-Fits-All Vacations: A simple beach vacation is nice, but a personalized itinerary that lets you explore what you truly want to see in a destination is even better.
