NICOLAS GHESQUIÈRE

Recently, the biggest news in fashion is the transition at Louis Vuitton. Creative Director Marc Jacobs stepped down, and taking over is former Balenciaga designer (1997-2012), Nicolas Ghesquière. Ghesquière was born in Comines, France in 1971 and at an early age of 15 secured a summer internship at Agnes B. in Paris. Soon after, Ghesquière realized that to fully immerse himself into fashion, he must make the move to Paris. Once Ghesquière had finished school, he moved to Paris with an assistant job to Jean Paul Gaultier. Five years later Ghesquière was hired by Balenciaga’s parent company to design knitwear in Japan. After three years, young Ghesquière became the top candidate to replace former Creative Director for Balenciaga, Josephus Thimister.

Ghesquière presented his first ready-to-wear collection for Balenciaga’s Le Dix Spring 1998 show. Within the first few collections it became evident that Ghesquière brought huge success to the fashion house. Sales had doubled within the first two years which drew much attention to Ghesquière and his unique eye for design. Collections were in high demand and lines formed outside flagship stores waiting for the newest products. 2000 was a busy year for Ghesquière. Not only did he release the Lariat handbag which received much appeal, especially to model Kate Moss, but also was named Best Avant-Garde Designer at the Vogue Fashion Awards. The press and fame was increasing at all-time high.

Ghesquière was named Womenswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA and featured in Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2005. In 2008, Ghesquière was given the Accessories Council Excellence Award for Designer of the Year. Two years later, Ghesquière was crowned Fashion Group International’s Superstar.

Ghesquière remains true to the legacy of Balenciaga and Cristóbal Balenciaga’s original elegance and innovative aesthetic. He is to thank for turning the fashion house completely around and creating designer products that are cutting-edge with colossal commercial impact. With major inspiration from his adornment for the 80’s, a nostalgic essence is interpreted into many of his collections.

Balenciaga is now in the hands of designer, Alexander Wang. As of November 4th 2013 Ghesquière joined French luxury label, Louis Vuitton as their Creative Director for ready-to-wear, replacing designer Marc Jacobs. Ghesquière announced his departure from Balenciaga after an outstandingly edgy yet classic Spring 2013 show, which would be his last for the label.

Vuitton said Ghesquière would bring “a modern creative vision to the house’s women’s collections, building on the values of refinement, savoir faire and extreme quality,” WWD reports.

There is much anticipation and excitement for the revealing of Ghesquière’s first collection for Louis Vuitton this March, where he will be showcasing the Fall/Winter 2014 collection at Fashion Week.
